چکیده

The current generation of radio and millimeter telescopes, particularly the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), offers enormous advances in observing capabilities. While these advances represent an unprecedented opportunity to advance scientific understanding, the increased complexity in the spatial and spectral structure of even a single spectral line is hard to interpret. The complexity present in current ALMA data cubes therefore challenges not only the existing tools for fundamental analysis of these datasets, but also users’ ability to explore and visualize their data. We have performed a feasibility study for applying forms of topological data analysis and *e-mail: [email protected] †e-mail: [email protected] ‡e-mail: [email protected] §e-mail: [email protected] ¶e-mail: [email protected] ||e-mail: [email protected] **e-mail: [email protected] ††e-mail: [email protected] visualization never before tested by the ALMA community. Through contour tree-based data analysis, we seek to improve upon existing data cube analysis and visualization workflows, in the forms of improved accuracy and speed in extracting features. In this paper, we review our design process in building effective analysis and visualization capabilities for the astrophysicist users. We summarize effective design practices, in particular, we identify domain-specific needs of simplicity, integrability and reproducibility, in order to best target and service the large astrophysics community.

3D visualization of astronomy data cubes using immersive displays

We report on an exploratory project aimed at performing immersive 3D visualization of astronomical data, starting with spectral-line radio data cubes from galaxies. This work is done as a collaboration between the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manitoba. We are building our prototype using the 3D engine Unity, because of its ease ...

A Distributed GPU-based Framework for real-time 3D Volume Rendering of Large Astronomical Data Cubes

We present a framework to interactively volume-render three-dimensional data cubes using distributed ray-casting and volume bricking over a cluster of workstations powered by one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) and a multi-core CPU. The main design target for this framework is to provide an in-core visualization solution able to provide three-dimensional interactive views of terabyte-s...

Scientific Visualization in Astronomy: Towards the Petascale Astronomy Era

Astronomy is entering a new era of discovery, coincident with the establishment of new facilities for observation and simulation that will routinely generate petabytes of data. While an increasing reliance on automated data analysis is anticipated, a critical role will remain for visualization-based knowledge discovery. We have investigated scientific visualization applications in astronomy thr...

A Hybrid Method for Segmentation and Visualization of Teeth in Multi-Slice CT scan Images

Introduction: Various computer assisted medical procedures such as dental implant, orthodontic planning, face, jaw and cosmetic surgeries require automatic quantification and volumetric visualization of teeth. In this regard, segmentation is a major step. Material and Methods: In this paper, inspired by our previous experiences and considering the anatomical knowledge of teeth and jaws, we prop...

Distributed Contour Trees

Topological techniques provide robust tools for data analysis. They are used, for example, for feature extraction, for data de-noising, and for comparison of data sets. This chapter concerns contour trees, a topological descriptor that records the connectivity of the isosurfaces of scalar functions. These trees are fundamental to analysis and visualization of physical phenomena modeled by real-...
